Postmodernism.
Postmodern design, which emerged in the late 20th century, represents a significant departure from the strict functionalism of modernism. It is characterized by its eclectic and often playful blend of historical references, styles, and materials. Postmodern designers sought to challenge the rigid rules of modernism and embraced a more diverse, whimsical, and often ironic approach to design. This movement encouraged the use of pastiche, where elements from different historical periods and cultural sources were combined to create unique and sometimes controversial designs. Key figures like Ettore Sottsass and the Memphis Group in the 1980s exemplified this movement with their bold and colorful creations. Postmodern design celebrates individualism, complexity, and a sense of irony, emphasizing the subjective experience of design over universal principles.
