The Gispen 5600 cabinet was designed by A.R. Cordemeyer (André) and L.J. Holleman in 1959. The Gispen 5600 cabinet was called storage furniture at the time. A smart and playful Mid Century modern design. This large Gispen 5600 cabinet consists of three linked cabinets, with flap doors and drawers. The set is easy to combine with other parts of the 5600 Gispen cabinets.
In 1960, Gispen wrote in an advertising brochure about the Gispen 5600 cabinet:
For your living room, your study, your oldest’s room, the playroom for the little ones, office or library, for every room, for every storage problem there is a storage unit-5600. The system consists of uprights, single and double, in three different heights and shelves that are adjustable every 2.5 cm. The uprights can also be placed on top of each other, so that the storage unit can be expanded not only in width but also in height. The compartments can be completed to form cabinet elements by adding rear walls, flaps, sliding doors or sliding windows. These parts can be placed on either side as desired, so that the storage furniture can also be used freestanding as a room divider. Drawers can be placed under a shelf, even behind a flap. A composition of 3 large, or 2 large + 2 small drawers can also be added as an independent element. Furthermore, a large number of special features are supplied: narrow shelves, vertical (they wrote vertical in those days) dividers, glass plates, writing top with plastic cover, lighting, compartments for the small drawer, gramophone record shelves, cross braces, flaps with lock and a cover shelf with plastic cover.
